Chapter 27

Demyan

WE RINSE AND DRESS before sitting at the table comparing notes on the new women currently making our lives hell. With fine glasses filled with Fíanac, conjured from the Abyss, in hand, we lay out a grid of where the darkling can be.

His silver eyes are mild, free of the tightness from before. The occasional bump of his knee to mine is a firm reminder of what transpired.

Something I never thought to experience again this side of death.

“There is a strip of supernatural shops near the cemetery in Stratford,” I broach, forcing my mind back to the matters at hand. “We can take the witchling and start there.”

He nods and runs his fingers through his hair, pulling it up with the jet band on his wrist. Deft movements have it braided in moments, leaving the lean lines of his face sharp and severe. “It may be our best shot.”

If his darkling is maddening him like the witchling is me...they need to be united.

And soon.

Though at the rate my body burns, I may combust before I ever touch her.

“We will find the darkling again, Seir.”

He smiles, flashing fang. “I know, Dem.”

We fall into a companionable silence. I finish off the fluid in my glass and fill it again.

“Will you ask your hybrid to bed you?” he asks after a time. There is nothing but kindred suffering and curiosity in his gaze.

“I am her owner now, Seir. A demon prince. How can I?” I glance away. “She is the first woman I have ever worried about turning me away.”

“If you let your leash go...”

My head shakes. “Mayhap that is what the passage meant. The one from the old tales of the Key.”

One dark brow arches. “What do you mean?” he asks.

“We must love them as God loves them,” I say. “Selflessly and of their own free will.”

He sits back in the small chair. “No powers then.”

I huff. “Rather damn impossible when they raise them as they do.”

His lips tug. “It is a test, old friend,” he says. “To see if we are worthy.”

“I thought we were done with God’s infernal tests eons ago.”

Seir snickers. “Apparently not,” he says. “Apparently not.”

“We need a meeting with the other Princes without raising alarms. What we are considering is paramount to treason or abandonment, depending on who you speak to,” I say.

“Casco, I believe, would aid our cause, simply on the pretext of claiming the glory once it is over.”

My chuckle is low. The Prince of Pride would indeed.

“Gifre may as well, though for his own hatred of his Father,” I say, rubbing my jawline.

“Adom will follow him,” Seir says. “Regardless of what it entails.”

“So that leaves Belial and Invidre,” I say.

“Belial is still young. He does not quite grasp what it means to be Demon,” Seir starts. “Invidre...will be troublesome.”

I lean back, stretching my legs out to entwine with his beneath the table. My arms cross as I mull over his words. “It is almost a shame that Enok and Agur gave up their places in the hierarchy.
